If I was hired to improve Baruch College here are a few things I would do. I would launch a campaign to hire adviser interns who can get paid by reducing their student debt to the college. The advisement is understaffed, new students do not have the option to be on campus to learn from one another. Hours for meetings are backlogged a month behind. We do not have enough advisors and depending on the day they can be overwhelmed with the work they have to do, so you may have a situation where all of your questions are not fully explained or answered.
The one thing students constantly complain about is the cost of books, and supplies. There are many challenges students face off campus that hurt their ability to pay for books. Cost of living and childcare are among some of the top problems students have to deal with when it comes to everyday life, paying for expensive books can put a strain on anyone trying to make it in this expensive city. Open sharing for books would help alleviate the pressures of having to choose what books you will purchase and which class you will try to manage without one.
The upskilling challenge is a great program for students to learn skills they are interested in. The CUNY pilot program offers how to learn Python, Medical software and financial analysis classes in your spare time. I hope this program continues to be offered to students after we are able to return to in person learning. This free program helps students get jobs through earning certified certificates that are accepted by many companies.
The idea of hiring adviser interns is incredibly smart. Utilizing the current budget to better utilize itself is a smart way for the college to grow it's financial capability. I also believe that this opportunity would give the interns great experience and provide them tools to think about the financial aspects of an organization differently.
